Practical Solutions for Common Clogs

Boiling Water

Start with the simplest solution: boiling water. Carefully pour a kettle of boiling water down the drain to help break up grease, soap scum, and other debris that may be causing the clog. This method is particularly effective for minor blockages and can be repeated as needed.

Baking Soda and Vinegar

Create a natural drain cleaner by combining baking soda and vinegar. Pour half a cup of baking soda down the drain, followed by a cup of vinegar. Let the mixture fizz for about 15 minutes to break down the clog, then flush the drain with hot water. This eco-friendly solution is safe for most types of pipes and can help clear stubborn blockages.

Plunger

For more stubborn clogs, a plunger can work wonders. Make sure there’s enough water in the sink to cover the plunger, then place the plunger over the drain and pump it up and down vigorously. The suction created by the plunger can dislodge the clog and allow water to flow freely again.

Zip-It Tool

Invest in a zip-it tool, a simple and inexpensive device designed to remove hair and debris from drains. Insert the zip-it tool into the drain and pull it out, along with any gunk that may be causing the blockage. This tool is especially effective for hair clogs in bathroom sinks and showers.

Wire Hanger

In a pinch, a wire hanger can be used to unclog a drain. Straighten out the hanger and create a small hook at one end. Insert the hook into the drain and use it to fish out any debris that may be causing the clog. Be gentle to avoid damaging the pipes.
